Skill Development

Writing

Students will receive instruction in the following aspects of writing:

• for specific purpose
• to clarify, and express thoughts and feelings
• for a selected audience
• different forms of writing (journals, surveys, interpretations, reports, supported opinion pieces, charts, instructions, maps, etc)
• language conventions through application (punctuation, grammar, etc)
• graphic organizers - for pre-writing, blending information, ideation, structure
• critical analysis - critical thinking skills
• note taking
• summarization
• language complexity - effective use of language
• vocabulary development
• subject specific test taking skills, study skills


Reading

Students will receive instruction in the following aspects of reading:

• strategic reading – skimming, scanning, etc.
• use of context clues
• data collection skills – finding relevant information
• research using a variety of materials ( biographies, charts, maps, reports, supported opinion pieces, surveys, interpretations, instructions, etc.)
• recognition of specialized subject related terms, vocabulary development
• summarization
• analysis, deconstruction of a variety of readings – critical thinking skills
• comprehension of organizational techniques of material – introduction, theme, tone
• subject specific study skills, test taking skills

High School Credit Courses

The Harbour Centre offers over 45 high school credit courses. These courses have been designed for independent learning therefore the student may choose any level of teacher or tutorial support. For the more difficult courses such as calculus many students opt for the one on one tutoring where others may opt for help on an as needed basis for the less demanding subjects. The student may start the course at any time and work at their own pace. All credit courses offered are Ministry of Education recognized.


Tutoring


• The Harbour Centre’s mission is to ensure that each child is encouraged to meet their potential and to appreciate themselves as learners.

• Strong focus on improving core fundamental skills while addressing the immediate daily school demands such as homework, essays, tests and exams.

• Provide a comfortable, consistent, distraction-free learning environment.

• Provide an individualized tutorial program designed to address your child’s specific needs. A strong emphasis is placed upon positive reinforcement and recognition of achievement. The student is made to feel that they are part of a program that is designed for those who want to excel.

• Primary and junior levels have an emphasis on mathematics, reading and writing.

• Intermediate and senior levels have an emphasis on language, math and science.

• Organizational and study skills are a focus for all grade levels.

• Your child’s progress will be closely monitored and you will receive feedback on a regular basis.

• All teachers / qualified tutors have an appropriate level of knowledge to support the students

• Tutoring classes are one hour in length.

Primary / Junior / Intermediate Grades

Reading-word recognition, phonics, reading for information, reading for pleasure

Writing- spelling, organization, ideas, content, voice, conventions and effective use of language
Mathematics-use of manipulatives, strategies, math games

Study and Organizational Skills- time management, use of outlines and organizers, library and research tips
